Seats for
Henri Matisse
Six seats for Henri Matisse, who used cut outs to deal with a disability inhibiting his life-long pursuit, painting.
My drawings pull shapes from his biographical collage series, “Jazz” (1947), which explores themes of dread, loss and confinement through an innocent visual langauge.
I chose to design chairs as a homage to the intricate worlds Matisse created while being confined to his own immediate reality, a wheelchair.
